Now that you understand what a pipe band is, you might be wondering—how do you actually get started? Whether you’re interested in playing the bagpipes or drums, here’s what you need to know:

Choosing Your Instrument

The first step is deciding whether you want to play the bagpipes or become a drummer. Each role has a unique function in a pipe band:

  • Bagpipes – Pipers start by learning on a practice chanter before moving to the full bagpipes.

  • Snare Drum – Snare drummers start with drum pads to develop stick control and technique.

  • Tenor Drum – Adds mid-range depth and visual flair with flourishing movements.

  • Bass Drum – Provides steady pulse and depth.
